Chihuahuan
Desert Research Institute
Fort Davis, Texas
(915) 364-2499
The Chihuahuan Desert Institute is a non-profit institution
that was formed to provide educational programs and
encourage scientific study of this unique desert region.
Located on 507 acres of wooded grasslands south of Fort
Davis, CDRI offers the visitor nature walks through
their Chihuahuan Desert Arboretum, a living museum of
native plants. A large cactus and succulent greenhouse
allows the enthusiast an opportunity to view over 240
species of Chihuahuan cactus, many are often in bloom.
For the hardier hiker, two trails are accessible from
the CDRI grounds. The Modesta Canyon Trail is a slightly
rocky descent to a series of hidden springs in the wooded
canyon. A half and hour hike, the trail rises to the
Canyon edge and returns toward the CDRI headquarters.
A loop of that trail takes the hiker to a slightly more
ambitious climb along a series of steep cliffs overlooking
Musquiz Canyon to the top of Clayton Overlook
