Davis Mountains
Scenic Loop (75 Miles)
Travel through mountains, valleys and desert landscape
in one of the most beautiful drives in Texas. Heading
North on Hwy 17 out of Marfa, drive approximately 20
miles to FM166. Traveling west on FM166 passing a great
picnic area known as Point of Rocks and then through
Bloys Camp, a century old Ecumenical religious camp.
Continue north on FM166 as you make the loop towards
the McDonald Observatory. You will pass Mt. Livermore
and Sawtooth Mountain with large expanses of prairie
land. When you approach the intersection of Highways
FM166 and Texas Highway 118, go south on 188 through
Madera Canyon and past the Observatory atop Mts. Locke
and Fowlkes. Continue through Fort Davis on your way
back to Marfa.
Pinto Canyon Road – FM 2810
Starting at Highway 90 in Marfa, FM 2810 is considered
the favorite drive, bike ride and star viewing site
by many of the locals. The first 30 miles is paved road
with beautiful expanses of ranch land and mountain vistas.
The remaining 20 miles of dirt road switches back through
Pinto Canyon. This portion of the road is challenging
and only recommended for vehicles that are designed
for off road driving. Also a few miles from the end
of the road is the cutoff for Chinati Hot Springs. A
rustic and delightful retreat open to the public for
picnics, camping and overnight visits
